What do I need to get on this course?
4 GCSEs at grade C or above plus portfolio of artwork to study a BTEC Extended Diploma and a NCFE

5 GCSEs at grade A-C plus portfolio of artwork to study a BTEC Extended Diploma and an A-level

The portfolio could include projects completed in school, project drawings produced at home. These could include sketchbooks, project files, drawings and final pieces. Your portfolio does not have to include textile work.

What will I study?

  • You will learn and develop through a series of practical projects
  • You will explore textiles in relation to fashion, interiors, fine art and craft
  • You will experiment with a wide range of conventional and unconventional materials, techniques and processes.
  • You will learn specialist textile skills such as fabric manipulation, printed and embroidered textiles.
  • You will be encouraged to put your individual interpretation on to any brief given so that you can progress successfully your area of interest e.g. interior design, fashion textile design, textile art.
  • You will be supported in your progression to degree or career of your choice. We have 100% success in this. All students have been successful in gaining a university place.

What else can I study?
This course allows you to study an A-Level in Fine Art or a NCFE qualification.

What can I do after this course?
You can progress onto a range of courses at Degree or Foundation Degree level programmes in Textiles, Interior Design, Applied Arts, Costume Construction for Stage and Screen, Fashion, plus many more.

What career paths does this course help me get into?
There are a variety of career opportunities relating to textiles including; employment with national and international design companies designing or buying fashion and interior fabrics, this can be over a series of specialist markets including Clothing, Giftware, Accessories and Costume. You could work on a self employed basis as a Designer Maker, Textile Artist or Freelance Designer in a variety of specialist areas of Textiles, Interior Design, Trend Forecasting and Illustration.

Live projects / Trips / competitions
An emphasis is placed on professional practice as a result you will take part in a live competition project in the first year which provides you with opportunities to exhibit your work. Students are entered into a digital print competition with BA (Hons) Textile and Surface Design students and prize winners exhibit their work in Paris at the international trade show Indigo. In 2011, three students from this course successfully exhibited their work at Indigo, which is one of the most prestigious textiles trade shows in the world.

You will have the opportunity to participate in a range of educational visits to local and national museums, galleries and events such as The Knit and Stitch Show and New Designers in London.
