Higher Education Students (Honours Degrees and Foundation Degrees)
CCAD Student Support
Cleveland College of Art & Design is committed to providing a range of support services to help students. The College recognises that all learners are different and have individual needs that may require help in order for them to take full advantage of the course(s) they wish to study.
When you come to CCAD you will be allocated a Student Support Adviser. (S)he will try to support you with any non-academic issues you may face. This can include issues with travelling to college, finding accommodation, financial difficulty, personal issues that might prevent you from attending or making progress, health, childcare, or identifying any learning difficulties or physical disabilities that might need additional support.
Student Support will make every effort to find out about your particular needs as soon as possible and put in place the support you need. To help this happen we would encourage you as a prospective student to let us know about your needs through your application form or at interview. Alternatively you can receive advice or talk to one of the Student Support Staff on 01642 298821. Please don’t forget that even if you don’t want to discuss a need prior to coming to college Student Support staff will be available when you do wish to talk about an issue.

CCAD Counselling Service - Help is Available
The College recognises that for some learners personal or emotional issues, both short and long term, can get in the way of productive learning. In order to help learners to deal with such issues and fully engage with the learning opportunities available to them, the College provides a confidential Counselling Service.
The College Counselling Service aims to:
- • Work with learners who chose to come for counselling regarding emotional/ psychological issues. To work with reasonable care and skill so as to bring about positive therapeutic change. To help enable students to become more effective in their lives both within and outside of the college environment.
- • Foster a co-operative working relationship with the College, within the bounds of confidentiality.
- • Raise awareness, understanding and the profile of counselling as a useful and beneficial resource.
- • Cultivate a preventative culture of mental well-being which serves to maximise learner potential and minimise crisis.
- • Collaborate with relevant personnel and external agencies to provide procedures to deal with, for example, psychiatric emergencies, mental health issues, child protection and drug/alcohol abuse.
There is provision for both learners and staff to discuss counselling issues and concerns without an appointment during ‘open access’ times. Learners are informed of the availability of the Counsellor at their induction.
Appointments can be made:
- • During open access
- • By telephoning the Counsellor
- • By referral through an academic or progress (pastoral) tutor.
Contact can be made with the Counsellor on the following telephone numbers:

Crisis Support
While you are a student you may have to deal with an important personal issue or decision that affects the rest of your life. CCAD aims to support any student through immediate crisis via the provision of a Counselling service to help students make difficult decisions. Student Support Advisers also have links with many local support networks and have referred previous students to agencies to provide specialist support with concerns about their sexuality, concerns about their gender, issues of homelessness, pregnancy advice, etc. Staff at CCAD will try to make sure you are able to make the right decisions for yourself at any critical point.

Accommodation (including residential bursary)
For advice on student accommodation call 01642 298753 or contact Student Support here through the web site.
As a specialist college of art and design, CCAD participates in the National Residential Bursary Scheme. Residential Bursaries are available for full-time Further Education learners who wish to study at the College but who live beyond normal daily travelling distance. The Residential Bursary can fund such students either to live in rented accommodation close to the College or to contribute to the cost of travel where students prefer to stay at home. The value of the bursary is up to £80.00 a week for students living in rented accommodation. Applications are means tested so the amount you receive will depend on the sources of income available to you.
You can contact Student Support by telephone on 01642 298821 or contact Student Support here through the web site.

Local Landlords
The College does have a list of local landlords who offer student accommodation. However it should be noted that while the College undertakes basic checks regarding health and safety issues as they apply to rented student accommodation, issuing this housing list to students is not a recommendation of the properties. The College advises all students and parents to satisfy themselves of the standard of the property before committing themselves to a contract (which is usually for an academic year) as the College will not accept responsibility if a student is subsequently dissatisfied with the property.
Although the College does not recommend or allocate properties the Student Support advisor responsible for accommodation will give advice to students on accommodation issues and will support students should disputes arise regarding their accommodation. For housing lists and further information please telephone 01642 298753.
