4 GCSEs at grade C or above plus portfolio of artwork to study a BTEC Extended Diploma and a NCFE
5 GCSEs at grade A-C plus portfolio of artwork to study a BTEC Extended Diploma and an A-level
The portfolio could include observational drawing, initial fashion design ideas generation (quick sketches), paintings, photography, pencil drawings, written work such as shop reports etc. Anything that helps us to see your potential!
What will I study?
- You will develop your personal qualities and attitudes across a wide range of assignments which focus on technical training and design understanding and realisation, which is essential for career development in the fashion industry
- You will gain a clear understanding of the whole design process, from pattern cutting and garment production through to historical and contextual understanding, fashion illustration, presentation techniques and portfolio building
- You will develop your own style of fashion illustration through observational drawing and investigation into contemporary and historical artists and illustrators. You will also be taught a number of industry led computer software packages such as Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator
- The emphasis is placed on professional practice, working in an environment with industry standard equipment and with regular live projects set by practising designers and professionals. Your two years of study will culminate in a Final Major Project which promotes your individual concepts and design and technical expertise
- You will be given the opportunity to participate in a wide range of educational visits to local and national museums and galleries; events such as Graduate Fashion Week and New Designers; as well as European residential trips which in the past, have included Paris, Antwerp and London

This course allows you to study an A-Level in Textiles or a NCFE qualification.
What can I do after this course?
You can progress onto a range of courses at Degree or Foundation Degree level, Employment or self employment, depending on your chosen career goals.
What career paths does this course help me get into?
There are a variety of career opportunities relating to fashion including; Designer of Men’s Wear, Women’s Wear, or Children’s Wear. You can work in Bridal wear, Sportswear, Accessories, Lingerie, Costume or become a Pattern Cutter/Grader, Visual Merchandiser, Fashion Illustrator, Fashion Photographer, Fashion Journalist or Stylist.
Live projects / Trips / Competitions
Guest speakers include Debenhams Senior Boys wear Designer who works with first year students on a children’s wear design project. Design Director of Tallulah Love (lingerie company) and various other companies.
You will have the opportunity to visit galleries, museums and events in Antwerp and Paris, as well as UK cities such as London, Glasgow and Liverpool.
You will have regular chances to participate in industry related competitions. Competitions have included World Skills, The British Glove Association and Hand & Lock Embroidery.
